ECB opens a track for AI agents to pay with the digital euro
The European Central Bank is calling for merchants, payment service providers, fintechs and researchers to apply by November 9 for a new round of its digital euro innovation platform. One workstream covers AI in payments, including AI agents initiating or coordinating transactions on a user's behalf, with workshops running through the first half of 2027.
NoteAny issuance of a digital euro still needs EU legislation, so this is early. But a central bank formally scoping how AI agents should authorize payments gives banks and payment firms a live reference point for their own agentic commerce rules, ahead of one being set for them.
