ECB's Lagarde warns AI debt concentration could spill into euro area markets

ECB President Christine Lagarde told the European Parliament's economic affairs committee on September 28 that global equity valuations are concentrated in a small number of AI-related firms rapidly increasing their debt funding, and a sharp reassessment of their prospects could trigger market corrections that spill over to euro area investors. She said euro area firms will devote around 10% of total investment to AI this year, with AI-related borrowing already a quarter of firms' credit growth.
NoteA quarter of credit growth to firms tied to one asset class is a concentration number worth sitting with. Emerging-market supervisors far from Frankfurt should note that a reassessment of AI valuations in the US or Europe would not stay contained there.
