EMVCo proposes a framework to carry agent authority through card payments

EMVCo closed public comments on Sept. 30 on a framework proposing "Intent Services" that would let payment participants register and retrieve what a consumer authorized an AI agent to do, before, during and after a transaction. The standards body may also develop know your agent capabilities to identify agents in a payment. PYMNTS Intelligence found 56% of consumers would let an agent search and compare products, but just 37% would let one authorize payments.
NoteA valid card credential does not say what an agent was told to buy or for how much, and EMVCo's framework is an attempt to close that gap before issuers and networks carry liability for agents acting on it. Where that authority sits will shape how fast banks let agents hold a card at all.
