CommBank becomes first major Australian bank to pay for news used in AI prompts

CommBank said on October 2 it has become the first major Australian bank to sign a Copyright Agency Business Licence that gives its people permission to use eligible Australian news content in workplace generative AI tools. The licence does not allow the content to be used to train or improve an AI model. CEO Matt Comyn said it is "a practical step that shows innovation and the fair treatment of rights holders can be mutually beneficial."
NoteBanks hold troves of licensed and proprietary text, so a cleared, paid path for staff to use copyrighted news in AI prompts, without a training-data claim attached, could become a template other large employers copy as they push GenAI deeper into daily work.
