OpenAI to watermark ChatGPT text in the EU to meet AI Act rules

OpenAI said it will turn on invisible text watermarking, called textGrain, for ChatGPT and Codex users in the European Union over the coming weeks, after the EU AI Act required AI providers to label generated text in a machine-readable format. API watermarking will be opt-in worldwide, unlike Anthropic's mandatory watermarking for Claude. With the detector's false-positive rate set at 1 percent, it identified watermarks in about 95 percent of 400-token passages, a rate that fell sharply once the text was edited.
NoteOpenAI's EU watermarking is opt-in for API users, unlike Anthropic's mandatory one, so firms building on its models can't assume AI text carries a detectable label unless they turn it on themselves.
