Indonesia's parliament passes data law covering AI and blockchain

Indonesia's parliament passed the Satu Data Indonesia law on October 6, covering national data governance including the use of AI and blockchain. The law requires parliamentary approval before closed data can move outside Indonesian jurisdiction, and data administrators must report incidents within 24 hours. It also sets data security standards, security audits and data sovereignty audits, and provides for a national data body that reports to the president.

NoteFor banks and fintechs that rely on AI tools or cloud infrastructure hosted abroad, the new approval requirement before closed data can leave Indonesian jurisdiction could slow or complicate data flows, and the 24-hour incident reporting rule sets a tight new compliance clock.
